Women's Roles in the Great Depression.
The Great Depression was one of Americas worst down falls. It started in 1929 when the Stock Market crashed, and went until 1939. Jobs were scarce, most men were giving up and leaving their familys. Women were the back bone of the family's in the Great Depression. The womens roles were enhanced, women would control the family's money, and use and spare it for food. They also still had to take care of the children and feed them. They came up with new ways to save money and resources. They would warm up sevral meals in the oven to save gas. Women would reuse old clothes and cloth scraps to make new clothes. They would tell their husbands to pool together money with neighboring familys to buy food. They also had their husbands barter for things. While the Great Depression was hard for women, it started to pave the way to their way to their independence. |
