DDETrench Warfare
World War One was considered one of the greatest wars. It was called this because of the new fighting techniques and technolgy used. One of the techniques was called trench warfare. Trench warfare is when both sides make trenches, there is a space of land inbetween both sides called no mans land. No mans land is filled with barbed wire, land mines, and corspes. Soldiers were instructed to cross no mans land to see enemy postions, and to sometimes try and advance. At times both sides would call truces to collect their fallen comrades.
Inside the trenches dead bodies would sometimes be piled up on the top of the walls. The soldiers would use the mens bodies so they could walk straighter with out being shot. The ground in the trenches would fill up with water, mud, blood, and bacteria. Men would get trench foot, so they would put the dead bodies on the ground to walk on to get away from the water. Trenches were infested with rats, the men would have to fight with rodents for the little food they already have. When airplanes were being used to bomb the other sides the men made little underground rooms. They worked good for a while. Then, the germans started using posinous gas while they were bombing the other sides. The gas would go into the rooms and then suffocate the men. One of the greatest truces between the opposing sides is "The Christmas Truce of 1914". The truce started on christmas eve, the soldiers began singing christmas carols. Christmas morning german soldiers came out and wished the allies merry christmas in their native tounge. The allies were heisitant at first and then replied. The men exchanged presents, and food. Other truces were tried, but they were failed because of the officers threats for disciplinary actions. Trench warfare changed the ways of war and created many tragieties. Our country will never forget World War One and the soldiers who fought. |
